Ngày 17/12, Chính phủ Đức thông báo Thủ tướng Angela Merkel đã có kết quả âm tính với virus SARS-CoV-2 gây dịch viêm đường hô hấp cấp COVID-19.

Hồi tuần trước, bà Merkel đã tham dự hội nghị thượng đỉnh Liên minh châu Âu (EU) và có tiếp xúc với Tổng thống Pháp Emmanuel Macron - người vừa có kết quả xét nghiệm dương tính với virus SARS-CoV-2 trước đó cùng ngày.

Phát biểu trước báo giới, người phát ngôn Văn phòng báo chí chính phủ cho biết Thủ tướng Merkel đã được xét nghiệm chỉ vài ngày sau hội nghị thượng đỉnh vì đây là thủ tục thường nhật, đồng thời xác nhận xét nghiệm của nhà lãnh đạo Đức đã cho kết quả âm tính. Quan chức này cũng cho biết Thủ tướng Merkel cũng gửi lời chúc Tổng thống Pháp chóng bình phục.

Đức vẫn đang chật vật đối phó với dịch COVID-19 khi có thêm 30.423 ca mắc trong ngày 17/12. Đây là mức cao nhất được ghi nhận trong một ngày tại Đức. Hiện số ca mắc tại Đức đã lên tới hơn 1,4 triệu ca, trong đó có hơn 24.500 ca tử vong.

Cùng ngày, Thủ tướng Bồ Đào Nha Antonio Costa đã tự cách ly, một ngày sau khi ông dùng bữa trưa với Tổng thống Macron tại Paris.

Văn phòng Thủ tướng cho biết ông Costa chưa có triệu chứng nhiễm bệnh và đã được xét ngiệm trong sáng 17/12. Thủ tướng sẽ tự cách ly cho tới khi giới chức y tế có thể xác định "mức độ nguy cơ" của ông. Hiện nhà lãnh đạo này đã hủy bỏ mọi kế hoạch làm việc trước mắt, trong đó có các chuyến thăm tới Sao Tome & Principe và Guinea-Bissau, hai quốc gia châu Phi từng là thuộc địa của Bồ Đào Nha.

Trước đó cùng ngày, Văn phòng Tổng thống Pháp thông báo ông Macron đã mắc COVID-19, do đó, ông sẽ tự cách ly trong 7 ngày và sẽ tuân thủ các quy định phòng, chống dịch bệnh của Pháp. Bên cạnh đó, ông sẽ làm việc và tiến hành các nhiệm vụ khác từ xa. Tổng thống Pháp cũng sẽ hủy các chuyến công tác sắp tới, trong đó có chuyến công du dự kiến tới Liban vào ngày 22/12. Hiện lực lượng chức năng Pháp đang nỗ lực xác định nguồn lây nhiễm của Tổng thống Macron. Trước đó, ông đã tham dự một hội nghị của Hội đồng châu Âu vào ngày 10 và 11/12. 

Sau khi Tổng thống Pháp có kết quả xét nghiệm dương tính với virus SARS-CoV-2, những người đã từng tiếp xúc với ông, trong đó có Thủ tướng Jean Castex, Chủ tịch Quốc hội Richard Ferrand và phu nhân của Thủ tướng, bà Brigitte Macron, cũng đang tự cách ly. Chủ tịch Hội đồng châu Âu (EC) Charles Michel và Thủ tướng Tây Ban Nha Pedro Sanchez cũng đang tự cách ly sau khi đã tiếp xúc với Tổng thống Macron.
